Computer Science for High School

Applicants from EMEA are eligible to apply for a CS4HS grant within the 3 categories outlined below. Please note that we will be funding a greater number of teacher training workshops (category A) than any other type of activity and we strongly encourage you to follow this format. Please see here for more information on workshop how-to’s.

We ask that universities applying for a grant in category B or C very clearly demonstrate the scalability and impact of their program in their proposals, as only a limited number of grants will be issued for these project types.

Category A: Teacher Training Workshops

Universities develop 2-3 day workshops for local HS CS teachers. These workshops incorporate informational talks by industry leaders, and discussions on new and emerging CS curricula at high school level.

Here are some things we learned from past workshops.

  • Typical workshops run 2-3 days, including breakfast and lunch, sometimes dinner.
  • It is a long day for participants, make sure to set expectations early, have an appropriate number of breaks (this is also a great way for people to network). Having a printed copy of the workshop schedule in addition to an online version helped many teachers.
  • Participants particularly liked our break-out sessions and hands on sessions, as opposed to strict lecture style presentations.
  • Some workshops included separate tracks for teachers with more or less programming experience.
  • Having a variety of teachers, including university faculty, students and high school teachers present materials was appreciated.
  • Time for participants to socialize and create lasting relationships is crucial.

Please see here for guidelines on teacher training workshop formats.

Category B: Student Training Workshops

Universities develop a series of CS workshops/scalable activities directed at secondary students to raise awareness of CS as a discipline. This can be in addition to teacher workshops and resources. These projects are particularly aimed at CS students who are at a disadvantage due to access to teaching resources or who are minority groups in computer science.

Please see the links below to successful projects:

Category C: Teacher Resource Projects

Universities develop projects aimed at raising awareness of CS as a discipline for teachers and students or develop scalable teaching resources. These projects must have nation-wide impact.

Please see the links below to successful projects of this scale:
